Posture & Seating
How the workplace can affect your posture
Posture is something that can be often overlooked when it comes to seating accommodations. Working at a desk daily can lead to poor posture, which can lead to health issues.
Importance of good posture
Having poor posture can create pain in your back, neck, and shoulders. It can also create issues in your spine, decrease blood flow, and even negatively affect your balance. There are many reasons why we should place importance on improving our posture, and we should start in the workplace.
How does the workplace affect our posture?
In the workplace, our bodies get accustomed to sitting in uncomfortable, and unnatural, positions. Often, we tend to slouch unconsciously. This habit creates bad posture, and can cause physical pain when one gets up from their chair. We are all guilty of slouching over every now and again, but when we are stuck in these positions for ~40 hours a week, our bodies and health can be seriously negatively affected.
Combating bad posture
Many of the ways to combat negative posture, is to simply improve it. Reminding oneself through the day to keep our feet flat, shoulders open, and sit up straight can seriously improve one's posture. As far as things that are in ones own control, the best way to combat bad posture, is to try to improve it throughout the day.
Other options we have to improve posture, is to find better seating accommodations. The manufacturing company, Neutral Posture, does a great job of making chairs that are specifically designed to improve one's posture. They designed these chairs to help capture the “Natural, stress-free position is the body's preferred posture, similar to the free floating posture…” Neutral posture developed these chairs in order to “emulate the body's preferred position while they work.”
Overview
Having good posture can hold a lot of positive effects over our health, and it is important that we make an effort to improve our posture. Rather one chooses to self-correct their unconscious slouching, or your office invest in posture friendly chairs, it is important that we take these steps to improve our posture, and in tern our health.
